JJ Wetherholt Homers in Electric Memphis Debut
Cardinals top prospect JJ Wetherholt didn’t waste any time making his mark in Triple-A.
Just days after being promoted to the Memphis Redbirds, the 2024 first-round pick announced his arrival with authority — blasting a home run and a triple in his Triple-A debut on July 9.
The Cardinals officially assigned Wetherholt to Memphis on July 7, per the team’s announcement. The 21-year-old infielder, currently ranked No. 19 overall by MLB Pipeline, joined the Redbirds following a stellar run at Double-A Springfield, where he slashed .300/.425/.466 with seven home runs, 34 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases over 62 games. He led the Texas League in both on-base percentage and OPS.
In his first game with Memphis, Wetherholt got things started with a triple in his first plate appearance. He followed that up by crushing a 424-foot solo homer to center field, showcasing the same blend of contact and power that has rapidly elevated him through the Cardinals system.
The smooth left-handed swing, high-contact approach, and defensive versatility up the middle also led to Wetherhot being selected to appear in the 2025 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game.
Wetherholt is quickly forcing the Cardinals to consider when — not if — he’ll be ready for the big-league stage.
